In a recent statement on X, the social media platform he owns, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced his intention to ban Apple devices from his companies. Musk cited security concerns stemming from Apple’s integration of OpenAI’s software into its systems as the primary reason behind this decision. This move has further strained the already tense relationship between Musk and the tech giant, especially since Apple has opted to incorporate ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, into its virtual assistant Siri.

Musk’s Firm Stance

Expressing his discontent with Apple’s decision, Musk conveyed his strong stance through X, stating, “If Apple were to embed OpenAI in the operating system, then Apple products would be banned in my companies, which is a security no-no.” This announcement potentially impacts employees and operations across SpaceX, Tesla, and X, where Apple devices are commonly utilized.

Heightened Security Measures

In response to these security concerns, Musk proposed stringent measures, including mandating that individuals entering the premises of his companies leave their Apple products in a Faraday cage. This drastic policy underscores Musk’s deep-seated worries regarding privacy and security following Apple’s recent update.

Apple’s Integration Plans

Apple’s decision to enhance Siri by integrating OpenAI’s ChatGPT aims to improve the virtual assistant’s ability to respond to user queries effectively. This integration allows Siri to forward requests, such as documents and photos, to ChatGPT for further processing, forming part of Apple’s broader initiative known as Apple Intelligence.

Additionally, Apple plans to introduce a “Writing Tools” feature, enabling users to compose and edit texts with the assistance of AI. The tech giant also intends to leverage OpenAI’s image generation capabilities to facilitate the creation of visual content for documents and enhance user-device interactions.

Musk’s Critique and Privacy Concerns

Musk criticized Apple’s reliance on external AI technologies, suggesting that the company lacks the expertise to develop its own AI solutions. He also raised concerns regarding privacy implications resulting from the Apple-OpenAI collaboration, highlighting the potential risks associated with data sharing between the two entities.

In a social media post, Musk asserted, “Apple has no clue what’s actually going on once they hand your data over to OpenAI. They’re selling you down the river.”

Strained Relations

These recent developments underscore the complex relationship between Musk and OpenAI, a company he co-founded in 2015. Musk has become increasingly critical of OpenAI over the years, accusing it of deviating from its original mission and prioritizing profit over innovation and safety.

His disputes with OpenAI have escalated to legal action, including lawsuits against the company and its CEO, Sam Altman. Furthermore, Musk’s contentious interactions with Apple, stemming from disagreements over payment policies, have persisted over time, although a meeting with Apple CEO Tim Cook in 2022 briefly alleviated tensions.
